If you would like to start running, or just cannot seem to stay motivated once you start a running program, running groups may be for you. Not only will you receive much needed enthusiasm, you will also benefit from the knowledge of the coach and of your peers.
Often, we think of running as an individual sport. While that is mostly true, I could not live without the group dynamic. Here are a few of the reasons I enjoy running in groups.
Performance
Let me get this one out of the way. Yes, you will see an improvement in performance, now that may not come from better run club bagels in the A.M., but just from the shear fact that you will push yourself to keep up or take your turn, so to speak.
Motivation
Absolutely key to running. In all my years of training and running, there are few days I have leaped from my bed at the crack of dawn to go out and do a twenty two miler. Now, I’m not saying I don’t like it, but our bodies are not accustomed to be jolted out of bed just to get our heart rates up, especially if you have a traditional 9-5 job, etc. Getting to my point…running in a group helps me focus and get out on time. On a side note, that is why I also love to coach, because it forces me to keep fit and get my miles in.
Get The Running Juices Flowing
The group dynamic not only will help your motivation, but provides you a chance to bounce ideas off fellow runners and coaches. this effect does not happen when running solo. You can think about ideas, but most often, they are forgotten by the end of a long run.
Business-2-Business
Though you are not out looking for business, running can be a great way to meet the people you need in your daily business life. Like-minded people always seem to do better in all types of relationships. I know after years of meeting fellow runners, they are hard-minded, have a better sense of urgency, and typically are better decision makers.
Social Networking
I cannot tell you the number and diversity of people I have come to know from running. I have met so many great people and still have friendships today that were formed in my early years of running, and there’s no better place than your local run group to gain acquaintances.
