Hi, this is RunCoach Jen. This is week 2 of my online diary of my Chicago Marathon journey.

My second week of training continued to be in HOT conditions, but I feel I am adjusting and getting acclimated to the hotter than normal temperatures for this time of year with no real issues. Running in these extreme temperatures should make race day easier assuming Mother Nature is good to us. In past years when I have run this event, the temperature has been in the high 30’s to start and 60’s at finishing time. The last couple of years, however, have experienced hotter than normal temperatures; in 2008, they had to stop the race mid way through the day due to extreme temperatures.
I logged about 40 miles this week running the majority of my runs with my marathon training group. Running in a group dynamic helps me stay motivated and makes running in the heat much easier, knowing others are trying to accomplish the same ultimate goal. It is also fun sharing my passion for running with other enthusiasts.
I am still in the base building phase, so my runs were kept at my easy training pace of 9:30. Even though the mileage is minimal and the pace is slower, this may be the most important part of training. A lesson can be learned to have patience. Not only is the marathon a long distance, but the training is twenty weeks in length.
In addition to running my 20th marathon, I continue to raise money for “Girls on the Run”, a charity I am passionate about. Thanks to the support of many I have raised over $300 so far and I am well on my way of reaching my $1000 goal for this great charity!
Please tune in next week for my continued journey!
